Art Event # 5: Natural History Museum

During my visit, Sunday, December 13th, 2009, to the Natural History Museum in Balboa Park located in San Diego I viewed four different exhibitions. All equally moving in my own discipline. 

First was the Baja California, located on the upper level of the museum. Featuring imagery from National Geographic photographer, Ralph Lee Hopkins. This exhibition began September 19th and will continue until the 3rd of January. 

Next was Aerial Portraits of the American West: Photographs by John Shelton. Shelton is an acclaimed geologist and this event marks the first time his work is displayed. This exhibition started May 11th and will continue on through the latter part of next year. 

Followed by a short film entitled, Ocean Oasis, which discussed the coral reefs off the coast of Baja, California. And the bigger picture of how the ecosystems of both land and sea are connected. 

And I ended the day with Darwin: Evolution, Revolution. This exhibit went through the research that was published in Origin of Evolution to Darwin's own origin and how his work was reflected his own life. This event started November 7th and will be ending the 28th of February. 

After views all four exhibitions I can away with more knowledge, but with the new awareness came more questions. Questions of how and why things or events are categorized as natural. But I also can to appreciate the ecosystem that we live in and how science can be viewed as artistic, even though many people separate the two fields. Specifically the Ocean Oasis film, changed the way I view marine life. And although at times big creature frighten me, I understand that they are part of a greater scope of life, where I too inhabit. After taking my first art course at Cal State, I have been interested in displaying my own work. In viewing these art events, it inspires my own ideas of how I might in the future go about making those ideas reality. 

My only criticism would be one, I wish I spent more time in the Aerial Exhibition, but also that the Ocean Oasis film might have included the possible human damages including the messages of how to preserve these beauties. But I guess that is what people always here about. And I learned about Darwin's process of going about publishing or having doubts about publishing his work. And I also got an opportunity to interact with a green iguana which was really cool, this creature has the most beautiful eyes.  

Art Event # 4: Dance 324 Show

All I can say is, students on this campus are amazing artists. This show took place on the CSUSM campus, December 10th, 2009 at 2pm in ART 101 (as seen on the flyer). The event emphasized dance and film. From remote trio dances to Shawdow Dancing. These students took a cross-cultural and interdisciplinary focus on these clips of music videos. 

I definitely can see and appreciate the output of the usage of film to convey a message. After taking a film studies class I understand the film production process. This goes back to the importance of the field of Graphic Design and the importance of output and messages needed to be conveyed. Although art does not have to weigh in the technical aspect, seeing this event helped me understand the importance of output. 

 Within my own work, the usage of music and the emotions and imagery that can develop from the rhythmic flow. I know that when I listen to music images always come into my mind. And seeing this event inspired me to see the rhythms of music to interpret into art. Whether it be a flyer, flash illustration, or stop film clip. 

In viewing this event, I saw Filipino traditional dancing, and that was the first time that I have ever seen that type of dance. Which is vaguely  pathetic because I am part Filipino ethnically, guess that means I might be researching into my own identity and heritage. 

My only criticism for this event would be to the Remote Dance, I guess I just wished for a little more creatively, but other than that all of the projects that I was able to view I enjoyed.

Art Event #3: Vocal and Jazz Ensemble Joint Concert

It is always great to see fellow classmates displaying their talents on stage! At these event I recognized some familiar faces singing and playing instruments. The first part of the concert was a vocal performance, I recognized Christopher from my GESS class and MUSC class, and Kelsey I met at the dorms. The following part was a Jazz performance, with David and Christopher again on the mic. And they did such a great job!

This event took place today, December 7th 2009 in Arts 111 at 7pm. I felt really happy after seeing this event. The singers sang classic songs like "Stand By Me" and a song by Steve Wonder. 

During this time in my life I really am getting into instrumental music. So hearing the Jazz performance felt like I was listening to my iPod. They played some songs that I recognized by the accredited John Coltrane. 

Seeing this event really reaffirmed my appreciation for the Arts and wish more people appreciate the Arts and what it can produce. 

There was a few technical difficulties with sound, and a few off keys from some singers, overall I enjoyed the performances. 

I learned about a pioneer of bee bop I believe his name was Dizzy. I could be wrong, I forgot to write it down. But I'll be googling it!
